Choosing Pets For Your Home

Pets, no matter their size or species — dogs, cats, hamsters, fish, birds — build bonds with humans and are often considered to be part of the family. They can help reduce stress, lower blood pressure and offer companionship. They also teach children about responsibility and compassion.

However, it’s important to think carefully about the type of animal you want to bring into your home. Consider who will be responsible for its care, how much time you have to dedicate to it and whether your living arrangements (e.g., apartment, condo) allow pets. Additionally, many towns, cities and condo associations restrict the types of animals that can live in them.

When choosing a pet, remember that it will be with you for its entire life. It may be difficult to give up a pet that has become accustomed to your routine, such as sleeping in the same room as you or begging for food at the door. Moreover, some pets may be too large or require too much space to be comfortably confined in your home.

Having a pet can be good for kids of all ages, but it’s especially beneficial for those under the age of 10. They learn that animals must be treated with respect, and they can gain valuable social-emotional skills by caring for and playing with them. But children should be monitored closely around pets and should never be allowed to touch or hold them without supervision.
