How to Keep Your Dog Happy and Healthy

A dog (Canis lupus familiaris) is a four-legged mammal that is the world’s most popular pet and most widely domesticated animal. It is closely related to wolves and shares many of their characteristics, including four legs, a tail, a superior sense of smell and sight, intelligence, quick learning skills, loyalty and more. Dogs are an important part of our families, serving as companions and helping us live more healthy lives. They are also found in the wild, both as strays and feral animals, living their natural life as hunters and scavengers, hunting for food or running free with their pack.

The key to a happy dog is providing wholesome nutrition, plenty of physical exercise, safe and secure home environment and quality time with their humans. Taking them for walks post dinner, taking them to new parks and woods to sniff out new scents, playing games together and giving them belly rubs are all good ways to ensure your dog is happy.

Many dog behaviors like begging at the table, jumping up on people and sleeping in the middle of the family are modern manifestations of instinctive actions from your dog’s early days in the wild. Aggressive behavior, chasing and resource guarding are often the result of these instincts as well. Digging and chewing can be a sign that your dog is bored or feeling anxious.

If your dog exhibits signs of anxiety or fear, a visit to your veterinarian is in order. They will be able to give you guidance that is specific to your dog’s needs.
