The cat is a small, feline, carnivorous (meat-eating) mammal that has sharp teeth and claws. It is a graceful predator that often stalks and kills birds or mammals. Like many other cats, it is a solitary hunter that does not live or hunt in groups (except for the pride-living lions).
Unlike most domesticated animals, cats have not evolved long enough to understand that they are “owned” by humans. Consequently, they still exhibit some of the hunting instincts of their wild ancestors and may chase or pounce at people, dogs, children, or other pets. This behavior usually ends with powerful slaps to the face and body with the forepaws and possibly bites or scratches. To help deter this behavior, you can provide your cat with a large scratch pole or post, which will give them something to mark as their own instead of drapes and furniture.
Cats communicate through vocalizations (meowing, chirping, purring, trilling, growling, and hissing), as well as body language and secreted pheromones. They have a well-developed sense of smell and can hear sounds too faint or high for human ears.
