A fragrance (as in perfume, cologne or toilet water) or a mixture of ingredients intended to impart, boost, or mask a pleasant scent. Fragrance may come from natural sources such as flowers or foods, but more often it is a synthetically manufactured chemical blend that can be found in many scented products. A perfume contains tens to hundreds of individual chemicals, which are listed only as the generic term “fragrance” in the ingredient list. Fragrance ingredients may also cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals and can trigger dermatitis and photosensitization.
The fragrance industry is a multi-billion dollar business, and its popularity has only increased with the recession and pandemic, with perfume sales up double-digits in both 2020 and 2021. Whether you’re looking for a signature perfume that will last the test of time or a new day-to-night scent, there is something for everyone in this collection of our favorite eau de parfums, eau de toilettes and colognes.
Fragrance Definition
A solution of a mixture of oils or extracts of plants or flowers, prepared for use as a personal odorant; the name is sometimes applied to scented lotions and aftershaves which have lower concentrations of perfume than perfumes, and to such alcoholic solutions as are used as aftershave. Usually a perfume consists of a top note, the fresh or volatile odour which is perceived immediately; a middle note, which provides full character and is usually somewhat more lasting; and a base note, the more solid or tenacious odour.
