What is Fragrance?

Fragrance is the name of a chemical mixture that gives perfumes and colognes their distinctive scent. It’s also what gives many scented household products like cleaners, air fresheners and scented hand lotion their smell. However, most people don’t know that the word “fragrance” covers dozens or even hundreds of chemicals and that most fragrance ingredients are not disclosed on product labels or safety data sheets. Some have been linked to health issues like cancer, reproductive toxicity and allergies or sensitivities.

This floral-woody perfume is the newest addition to the designer brand’s best-selling collection. It’s a perfect fragrance to wear to a romantic evening out, thanks to its notes of rose, ylang-ylang and Grasse jasmine grandiflorum.

Middle notes: The scents that appear just prior to the departure of top notes and help give perfume its body and personality. Middle notes can also be known as heart notes and often include florals, woods and fruits.

Base notes: The most intense and long-lasting of all scents. Base notes can be musky, powdery or warm and resemble the skin’s natural scent. The base of a perfume can be created with any combination of scents, but typically includes tobacco and musk.

Fragrance is a complex and controversial topic that isn’t likely to go away anytime soon, especially as the popularity of organic skincare continues to rise. While the beauty industry celebrates National Fragrance Day, we’re thinking about how to make fragrances more safe and mindful in the future with stronger regulations, more research and more transparency.
